MT. LEBANON, Pa. – The Mt. Lebanon School Board is considering a new policy that would significantly restrict high school students’ access to personal cell phones and earbuds during the school day. The proposal, aimed at reducing classroom distractions and improving student engagement, was the central topic of discussion at the board’s June 16 meeting.

The proposed guidelines would prohibit the use of personal electronic devices in all academic areas, including classrooms, study halls, and the library. While students would still be permitted to carry their phones, they would be expected to keep them silenced and put away throughout the instructional period.
During the discussion, school administrators presented the policy as a proactive step to address what they see as a growing source of distraction that can hinder learning. Board members largely agreed with the intent of the policy but raised several questions regarding its implementation and enforcement.
Concerns centered on ensuring the rules are applied consistently by all staff members and questioning what the consequences for infractions would be. The discussion also touched on the role of school-issued devices and whether management software like GoGuardian would be used to keep students on task.
The policy was presented as a discussion item, and no formal vote was taken. The board is expected to continue refining the proposal based on the feedback before bringing it back for a final vote at a future legislative meeting.
Further information and a video of the discussion can be found on the Mt. Lebanon School District’s BoardDocs page, which hosts agendas and meeting archives for the public. The district’s official website is mtlsd.org.
