DORMONT, Pa. – Dormont residents are thirsty for answers after a local water fountain has been out of commission for weeks according to borough records and resident accounts from the period.
The fountain, located on a main walking path near the pavilions, was reported to be non-operational for several months beginning in Spring 2024, coinciding with a seasonal heatwave. The prolonged outage prompted what officials at the time described as a “multi-faceted investigation” into the cause of the failure. The fountain, which also features a dog fountain, is the park’s only one.
“The functionality of our public amenities is a top priority,” a borough official was quoted as saying in a statement. “We assembled an inter-departmental task force to address the fountain situation and ensure a swift and sustainable resolution.”
Initial maintenance reports indicated the issue was more complex than a simple clog. The task force, which included personnel from Public Works and Parks and Recreation, ultimately identified a “compound systems failure.” The final report cited a faulty regulator valve, unexpected sediment levels, and significant supply chain delays for a specialized gasket fitting as contributing factors.
The situation was a frequent topic of discussion among park-goers. “You just don’t realize how much you rely on something until it’s gone,” one resident and frequent park user noted at the time. “It definitely impacted our afternoon routine.”
Service was fully restored to the fountain in mid-August 2024 after crews were able to source the necessary parts and complete the repairs. Officials stated that the incident led to a comprehensive review of the borough’s preventative maintenance schedules for all public hydration infrastructure.
