PITTSBURGH — When you find authentic food that’s made with care—you can taste it. You bite into something and immediately think, Yeah, I’m coming back here. That’s exactly the feeling you get at Pabellón Venezuelan & Mexican Cuisine, an unassuming but wildly delicious spot on Banksville Road.

Most people talk about the arepas here, and don’t get me wrong—they deserve every bit of hype. But if you stop at arepas and don’t dive deeper into this menu, you’re only getting half the experience.

First Impressions: Friendly Staff & the Smell of Something Amazing

Pabellon Banksville Llanera Steak Arepa, Gringo Taco, Empanada

Walking into Pabellón, it’s clear that this is a family-run restaurant in the best possible way. The staff are warm, cheerful, and hospitable. You don’t just feel like a customer—you feel welcomed, like you’re being hosted by someone who takes pride in their food.

The menu is a mix of Venezuelan and Mexican/Tex-Mex staples, and while the burritos and tacos hold their own, the real magic is in the Venezuelan specialties.

Incredible Arepas, But Don’t Miss the Super Sweet Plantain.

The arepas are crispy, fluffy, perfectly griddled, and generously stuffed. And yes, the namesake Pabellon Arepa is as good as everyone says.

But let me put you on to something: the Super Sweet Plantain.

Pabellon Banksville Super Sweet Plantain

If you love sweet and savory combinations, this dish is a must-order. A base of pan-fried plantain is deeply caramelized until it’s crispy on the outside and almost melting inside, topped half-and-half with slow roasted shredded chicken and shredded beef. It’s piled high with fresh pico and shredded cheese, topped with avocado slices. It’s wildly good. Order a side or two or three of the green sauce.

Empanadas: Don’t Overlook

Pabellon Banksville Empanadas

The empanadas also deserve just as much love. These are crispy, perfectly fried pockets of flavor. The corn dough has just a hint of sweetness and the fillings offer amazing flavor combinations.

The White Cheese & Plantain Empanada is a sweet-salty masterpiece in simplicity, giving you rich, buttery cheese with caramelized plantains all wrapped up in a crisp shell.

The Pabellón Empanada takes things to the next level—filled with slow-cooked shredded beef, black beans, cheese, and sweet plantains, it’s basically a Venezuelan flavor bomb in handheld form.

The Green Sauce: Your New Favorite Condiment

Pabellón’s green sauce deserves a review of its own. It’s a mix of avocado, cilantro, garlic, and probably a half dozen other ingredients. I’ve tried to make copycat recipes at home, and I’ve tried similar sauces at other restaurants. This one is different. The only one that even comes close to comparing is Cilantro y Ajo in Southside.

Pabellon Banksville Patacones

It’s a creamy, tangy, slightly garlicky sauce that makes everything taste even better. You’ll start by adding just a little to your arepa or empanada, and before you know it, you’re putting it on your rice, dipping plantains in it, and strongly considering buying a bottle to take home.

The Verdict: Your Next Favorite Spot

Beyond the food, the staff is genuinely kind, attentive, and happy to walk you through the menu if you’re unfamiliar with Venezuelan cuisine. It’s the kind of place where they actually care if you’re enjoying your meal, and it shows.

The food also makes for great takeout. I get takeout from them more than I dine in. The food is ready quickly and their Banksville Road location is surprisingly convenient for a lot the South Hills, and even parts of the city like Mt. Washington and Allentown.

Pabellón isn’t just another restaurant. It’s authentic people serving exceptional food. It’s the type of place that should be prioritized over Chipotle and Jersey Mike’s. Pittsburgh should cherish and support our small local restaurants, or we might look back and wonder how we got to a point where our only options are Dunkin’ Donuts and other just-barely-edible national chains.

Final Rating: 9.5/10 Green Sauce Bottles

The arepas are excellent, but if you skip the Super Sweet Plantain and empanadas, you’re missing out. And if you don’t get extra green sauce? Well, that’s just a rookie mistake. And this review really only hits on the Venezuelan part of the menu. The Mexican food is just as good.

Go. Order big. Thank me later.
